TODAY'S EPISODE: The God Who Comes Near

In today's readings, we encounter a beautiful contrast between suffering and healing, abandonment and belonging, despair and hope.

In Job 19, Job cries out from the depths of his suffering. His friends have misunderstood him, his relationships have fallen apart, and he feels utterly alone. Yet in the midst of his anguish, Job makes an extraordinary declaration of hope: his Redeemer lives.

Then, in Mark 1–2, we encounter Jesus entering into the brokenness of human life. He touches a man with leprosy, heals the sick, forgives sins, calls ordinary people to follow him, and shares meals with those whom respectable religious society has pushed aside.

And in all of this, we begin to see the heart of God.

The God Job longs to encounter is revealed to us in the person of Jesus Christ. Not a distant God who demands that we somehow overcome our brokenness before approaching him, but a God who comes near, who touches the untouchable, who welcomes the outsider, and who restores what has been lost.

Today's invitation is to discover that the Redeemer Job longed for is the very One who has come to us in Jesus.

TODAY'S DEVOTION: My Redeemer Lives

There's a remarkable moment in today's reading from Job.

Job has lost almost everything.

His health has deteriorated. His relationships have fallen apart. His friends have become his accusers. And the people who once knew and loved him have turned away.

He feels abandoned.

And yet, right there in the middle of his suffering, Job makes this extraordinary declaration.

"I know that my Redeemer lives."

I love that.

Because Job doesn't say these words after everything has been restored.

He doesn't say them when his suffering has ended or when all his questions have been answered.

He says them right there, in the middle of the pain.

And I wonder if there's something for us to discover in that.

Sometimes we imagine that hope is something we arrive at once our circumstances have improved. Once we've received the answers we've been looking for. Once the grief has lifted or the uncertainty has passed.

But Job offers us a glimpse of something deeper.

A hope that exists even when life doesn't make sense.

And then we turn to the Gospel of Mark.

And suddenly, we see the Redeemer.

We see Jesus moving among ordinary people. People who are sick. People who are isolated. People who have been pushed to the margins of their communities.

And what does Jesus do?

He comes near.

There's a man with leprosy who approaches Jesus and says that if Jesus is willing, he can make him clean.

And Jesus reaches out and touches him.

Think about that.

This man has likely spent years being avoided, excluded, and treated as someone who doesn't belong.

And Jesus touches him.

Before we even consider the miracle of healing, there's already something extraordinary happening.

The God of all creation, revealed in Jesus Christ, is reaching out to embrace someone whom the world has rejected.

And this is the good news.

Our Redeemer is not standing at a distance, waiting for us to become worthy of his attention. Our Redeemer has come all the way to us.

In Mark 2, Jesus shares a meal with tax collectors and others considered sinners.

The religious leaders are scandalized.

But Jesus sees something they have failed to recognize.

He sees people who are loved by God.

People who are worthy of dignity, belonging, and welcome.

And isn't that what we're all longing for?

To know that we're seen.

To know that we're not forgotten.

To know that our failures, our suffering, and our circumstances haven't somehow placed us beyond the reach of God's love.

This is what Jesus reveals.

The God Job longed to encounter is the God who has come to us.

And in Jesus, we discover that God's love is not something we have to earn.

It's something we are invited to receive.

Maybe today you're carrying a burden that has left you feeling isolated. Maybe there are things in your life that haven't turned out the way you hoped. Maybe you've been wondering whether God sees you at all.

I want you to hear this.

You are seen.

You are known.

And you are deeply loved.

The Redeemer lives.

And because he lives, your suffering does not have the final word.

Your past does not have the final word.

Your failures do not have the final word.

Jesus does.

And his word to you is love.

So perhaps today the invitation is simply to open your heart to the One who has already come near.

To receive his grace.

To rest in his love.

And to discover that you have never been outside his embrace.

And that's a prayer I have for my own soul.

That's a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and for you.

May you come to see the face of God in the face of Christ.

May you discover the Redeemer who comes near, who welcomes you, and who holds you in a love that will never let you go.

You are seen. You are known. You are loved.

And your Redeemer lives.

Amen.

TODAY'S PRAYERS:

Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.

Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen

And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen.
