Key Takeaways

  • Genuine faith does not require us to deny our suffering or pretend that everything is okay; Job's honesty reminds us that faith can look like grief and questions.
  • In the book of Acts, Paul stands before rulers and authorities with an uncertain future, yet continues to bear witness to the transformative hope of the risen Christ.
  • The hope of the gospel is not the certainty that our circumstances will change the way we wish, but the confidence that God has entered into our suffering and will never abandon us.
  • We do not have to manufacture hope through our own determination; rather, true hope is found in Jesus Christ, the risen Lord who holds us in His love.
  • Bringing our whole self to God—including our fears, disappointments, and unanswered questions—allows us to experience His unfailing love even when we feel like we can no longer hold on.

TODAY'S EPISODE: Hope When the Future Is Uncertain

In today's readings, we encounter two very different experiences of suffering, and a hope that reaches beyond our circumstances.

In Job 17, Job is weary, grieving, and struggling to imagine a future beyond his pain. The explanations offered by his friends have done little to comfort him. His words remind us that genuine faith doesn't require us to deny our suffering or pretend that everything is okay.

In Acts 24–26, Paul stands before governors and kings, defending himself against accusations and proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus. Though he remains imprisoned, he continues to bear witness to the hope that has transformed his life.

These readings invite us to consider a different kind of hope. Not the certainty that everything will happen as we wish, but the confidence that our lives are held in the love of the risen Christ.

TODAY'S DEVOTION: A Hope That Refuses to Give Up

There's something about Job's words today that I think many of us can recognize.

He's exhausted.

He's lost so much. His friends have offered their explanations, but very little comfort. And when he looks toward the future, he struggles to see anything beyond his suffering.

Job isn't trying to impress anyone with his faith. He's simply telling the truth about where he is.

And I think there's something beautiful about that kind of honesty.

Because sometimes we imagine that having faith means always being hopeful, always being strong, always having the right answers.

But Job reminds us that faith can also look like grief. It can look like questions. It can look like the courage to speak honestly when life has become more than we know how to carry.

And then we turn to the book of Acts.

Paul is standing before rulers and authorities. He's been accused, imprisoned, and misunderstood. His future is uncertain.

And yet, something remarkable happens.

Paul doesn't simply defend himself. He tells the story of Jesus.

He tells the story of the One who met him on the road to Damascus, the One whose resurrection changed everything.

And Paul speaks about hope.

Not because everything in his life has worked out.

Not because his circumstances have suddenly become easier.

But because he has encountered the risen Christ.

And that makes all the difference.

I wonder how often we've imagined hope as the belief that things are eventually going to turn out the way we want them to.

That the relationship will be restored. That the diagnosis will change. That the suffering will end. That we'll finally get the answers we've been looking for.

And sometimes those things happen.

But the hope of the gospel is something deeper.

Our hope is not ultimately that our circumstances will change. Our hope is that in Jesus Christ, God has entered into our circumstances and will never abandon us.

That's the good news.

Jesus has entered into the fullness of our humanity. He's known suffering, betrayal, injustice, and death.

And through his resurrection, he has revealed that none of these things has the final word.

Love does.

Life does.

Jesus does.

And that means your story is not finished.

Whatever you're facing today, whatever questions remain unanswered, whatever grief you're carrying, you are not beyond the reach of God's love.

You don't have to manufacture hope.

You don't have to pretend that everything is fine.

You can bring your whole self to the One who knows you and loves you.

Your questions. Your fears. Your disappointments. Your longing for things to be different.

All of it.

Because the love of God revealed in Jesus is not fragile. It doesn't depend on your ability to remain strong.

It's a love that holds you, even when you feel like you can no longer hold on.

And perhaps that's the invitation for us today.

To stop imagining that hope is something we have to produce through our own determination.

And to discover that hope is a person.

Jesus Christ, the risen Lord, who has taken hold of us in love.

And that's a prayer I have for my own soul.

That's a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and for you.

May you discover today that your life is held in the faithful love of Christ.

May you find the freedom to grieve honestly, to ask your questions, and to trust that the One who has begun a good work in you will carry it through.

You are seen. You are known. You are loved.

And the love that holds you will never let you go.

Amen.

TODAY'S PRAYERS:

Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.

Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen

And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen.
