TODAY'S EPISODE

In today's reading, Job refuses to settle for easy answers to difficult questions. His suffering has brought him to a place of profound uncertainty, yet he continues directing his questions toward God. His words remind us that faith doesn't always look like certainty. Sometimes faith looks like the courage to keep speaking, even when heaven seems silent.

In Acts 17, Paul stands before the philosophers of Athens and announces a remarkable truth. The God who created the heavens and the earth is not confined to temples, religious systems, or human understanding.

God is not far from any one of us.

In Acts 18, we see this same God encouraging Paul to continue his work, assuring him of divine presence even amid opposition and uncertainty.

Together, these passages invite us to reconsider what it means to trust God when life remains unresolved.

TODAY'S DEVOTION

God Is Not Far From You

There's something deeply moving about Job's honesty.

He's suffering. He's confused. He's frustrated with his friends and their explanations. And he's not afraid to say so.

Job wants an audience with God. He wants answers. He wants to make his case.

And perhaps you've been there.

Maybe you've found yourself asking questions you never imagined you would ask. Maybe something has happened in your life that has disrupted the way you've always understood God.

And suddenly, the familiar answers don't seem to work anymore.

I think there's something important for us to see here.

Job's questions are not evidence of God's absence. And they're not evidence of Job's failure.

They're the honest cries of a human being who longs to know that he has not been abandoned.

And then we come to Acts 17.

Paul is standing in Athens, surrounded by temples and statues, speaking to people who have spent their lives searching for truth.

And he tells them something extraordinary.

God is not far from any one of us.

Think about that.

Not far from the philosopher searching for understanding. Not far from the skeptic wrestling with doubt. Not far from the grieving parent. Not far from the person whose life has taken an unexpected turn.

Not far from Job, sitting in the ashes.

And not far from you.

Sometimes we've been taught to imagine God as distant, waiting for us to find the right words, believe the right things, or somehow make our way back to him.

But Jesus shows us something altogether different.

In Jesus, we discover the God who has come all the way to us.

The God who enters into our suffering. The God who meets us in our humanity. The God who does not stand at a distance from our pain, but who shares in it.

And this changes the way we understand our questions.

You don't have to resolve every mystery before you can rest in God's love.

You don't have to pretend that everything is fine.

You don't have to manufacture certainty.

You can bring your whole self before God. Your faith and your doubt. Your gratitude and your grief. Your hope and your disappointment.

Because the One who holds you is not threatened by your questions.

And his love for you is not dependent on your ability to answer them.

Maybe today the invitation is simply to stop striving to find a God who has never stopped being present with you.

To discover that even here, even now, in this very moment, you are held in the life and love of Christ.

And that's a prayer I have for my own soul.

And that's a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and for you.

May you come to see that the God you've been searching for has already come near to you in Jesus.

You are not alone.

You have never been beyond the reach of his love.

And you are loved.

Amen.

TODAY'S PRAYERS:

Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.

Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen

And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen.
