Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible. Today is September 11th, and together we continue our journey through the Scriptures with Daniel 1 and 2 and Revelation 16.
Daniel and his friends find themselves living in Babylon, far from home and surrounded by a culture that wants to reshape their identity. They are given new names, new expectations, and a new way of life. Yet Daniel quietly resolves to remain faithful.
Then King Nebuchadnezzar has a troubling dream. None of Babylon’s wise men can tell the king what he has dreamed or what it means. Daniel cannot do it either, at least not by his own wisdom. So he turns to God.
And the mystery is revealed.
Daniel’s response is not self-congratulation. It is worship. Wisdom and power belong to God. God reveals what is hidden. God knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him.
The vision itself points beyond Babylon and beyond every human empire. Kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall, but Daniel sees a kingdom established by God that will endure.
Revelation 16 brings us again into the strange and sometimes frightening imagery of John’s apocalypse, where the powers of this world are exposed and judged.
Through both Daniel and Revelation, we are reminded that empire does not have the final word.
God does.
And even when we cannot see what God is doing, we can trust the One who sees what is hidden and whose kingdom will not pass away.
TODAY'S DEVOTION:
The Revealer of Mysteries Daniel is living in a world he did not choose.
His home is gone. His country has been conquered. He has been carried into Babylon, given a Babylonian name, educated in Babylonian ways, and expected to serve a Babylonian king.
And then suddenly his life is threatened because the king demands the impossible.
Tell me my dream.
And then tell me what it means.
Daniel knows he cannot do this.
And I think that may be one of the most important things about Daniel.
He knows he doesn't have what it takes.
So Daniel gathers his friends and they pray.
And God reveals the mystery.
Daniel then stands before the king and says, essentially, “This isn't happening because I'm wiser than everybody else.”
God is the revealer of mysteries.
I love that.
Because so much of life is a mystery.
We don't know what tomorrow holds.
We don't always understand what is happening around us.
We certainly don't understand everything that is happening inside of us.
And sometimes, like Daniel, we find ourselves living in circumstances we never would have chosen.
But Daniel reminds us that we don't have to understand everything in order to trust God.
And then comes this extraordinary vision.
Daniel sees the kingdoms of the world rising and falling. Gold gives way to silver, silver to bronze, bronze to iron.
Every empire looks permanent when you're living inside of it.
But none of them are.
Then Daniel sees a stone that is not cut by human hands.
And eventually that stone fills the whole earth.
The kingdom of God.
A kingdom that doesn't arise from human violence, human ingenuity, or human power.
It comes from God.
And Revelation is telling us something very similar.
Babylon will not last.
The kingdoms of this world will not last.
Fear will not last.
Violence will not last.
Death will not last.
But the kingdom of our God will.
So perhaps today you find yourself facing something you don't understand.
You don't know how it's going to work out.
You don't know what comes next.
You don't have the answer.
Daniel didn't either.
But he knew the One who did.
So we can loosen our grip on our need to understand everything.
We can pray.
We can trust.
And we can remember that behind all the kingdoms that rise and fall, behind all the confusion and uncertainty of our lives, there is a kingdom that cannot be shaken.
And there is a King.
Jesus.
That's the prayer I have for my own soul.
That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son.
And that's the prayer I have for you.
May it be so.
