TODAY'S EPISODE
Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible. Today is October 15th, 2026, day 288 in our journey through the Scriptures.
In Nehemiah 13, we encounter the ongoing struggle of God's people to remain faithful. Even after rebuilding the walls and renewing their covenant, old habits return. Nehemiah calls the people back to a life that reflects their relationship with God. In Malachi 1–2, the prophet challenges a people who have allowed worship to become routine, offering God their leftovers while their hearts have drifted away.
Then, in Acts 4, we witness something extraordinary. Peter and John stand courageously before the religious authorities, proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus. When they return to the community, the believers pray together, asking God for boldness. The place where they are gathered is shaken, and they are filled with the Holy Spirit. Their shared life becomes a remarkable picture of generosity, unity, and courage.
These readings invite us to consider what happens when God's Spirit moves beyond our routines and awakens us to the life of Christ within us.
TODAY'S DEVOTION: When the Spirit Shakes Things Up
There's a whole lot of shaking going on.
That's what we see in Acts 4. Peter and John have just been threatened by the religious authorities. They've been told to stop speaking about Jesus. But instead of retreating into fear, they return to their friends, and together they pray.
And what do they pray for? Not protection from difficulty. Not an easier road. They pray for boldness. They ask God to continue working through them, to give them the courage to bear witness to the risen Jesus. And as they pray, the place where they're gathered is shaken.
I love that picture. The Spirit of God is shaking things up. But notice what this shaking produces. It's not simply a dramatic spiritual experience. It's a community of people who begin living differently. They're generous with one another. They're caring for those in need. They're holding their possessions loosely. They're discovering a new way of being human together, a life shaped by the presence of the risen Christ.
And I wonder if that's the kind of shaking we need too.
Sometimes we become so accustomed to our routines, our assumptions, and our ways of seeing the world that we forget what the Spirit is doing among us. We can become preoccupied with getting everything right, with protecting what we've built, or with managing our own little kingdoms. But the Spirit continues to draw us into something larger, something more beautiful, something that looks like Jesus.
The good news is that we don't have to manufacture this life. We don't have to work ourselves into a spiritual frenzy or somehow convince God to show up. In Christ, God has already come near. His Spirit has been poured out. And that same Spirit is at work in us, opening our eyes to the love of God and inviting us to participate in his life.
So maybe our prayer today is simply this: Lord, shake loose whatever keeps me from seeing you. Shake loose my fear, my selfishness, my need to control. Open my heart to the people around me. Give me the courage to love generously, to forgive freely, and to live as someone who knows that Jesus is alive.
Because wherever the Spirit of Christ is at work, love begins to take shape. Fear gives way to courage. Isolation gives way to community. And ordinary people discover that they are participants in the extraordinary life of God.
That's the prayer I have for my own soul, for my family, and for you.
May the Spirit shake things up in us, and through us, for the sake of the world God so deeply loves.
And may it be so.
