TODAY'S EPISODE
Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible. Today is October 13th, 2026, day 286 in our journey through the Scriptures.
In Nehemiah 9–10, the people of Israel gather to remember their story. They confess their failures, their stubbornness, and the many ways they've wandered from God. But woven throughout their confession is something even greater: the extraordinary faithfulness of God. Again and again, God has been patient, merciful, and steadfast in his love.
Then, in Acts 2, we arrive at Pentecost. The Holy Spirit is poured out upon the followers of Jesus. People from many nations hear the good news in their own languages. Peter announces that the crucified Jesus has been raised and made Lord and Messiah. And a new community begins to take shape, devoted to fellowship, prayer, generosity, and the breaking of bread. The God who has always been faithful is now making his home among his people through the Spirit.
TODAY'S DEVOTION: The Spirit Has Been Poured Out
There's a beautiful contrast between our two readings today. In Nehemiah, the people look back over their history, and they see a pattern. God has been faithful. They have been unfaithful. God has shown mercy. They have wandered away. Again and again, the story seems to repeat itself.
And yet, God never gives up on them.
I love that about this passage. The people are remembering their failures, but they're also remembering something far more important. They're remembering who God is. He's gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in unfailing love. That's the story beneath their story. That's the truth that has carried them all along.
And then we come to Acts 2, and something extraordinary happens. The Spirit of God is poured out. The presence of God is no longer something they must travel to the temple to encounter. God has come to dwell in his people.
And notice what happens. These frightened, uncertain disciples begin to speak with courage. People from different nations and languages hear the good news. Strangers become brothers and sisters. Possessions are shared. Tables are opened. A new kind of community begins to emerge.
This is what the Spirit does. The Spirit draws us into the life of Jesus, a life of love, communion, generosity, and freedom.
And here's what I want us to hear today, my friends. The Christian life is not primarily about trying harder to become the kind of people God might finally accept. It's about waking up to the astonishing reality that, in Christ, God has already come to us. He has given himself to us. His Spirit has been poured out.
We spend so much of our lives trying to close the distance between ourselves and God. We think if we could just pray more, do better, believe more firmly, or finally get our lives together, then perhaps we could draw near to him.
But Pentecost tells us something wonderful. God has crossed that distance. In Jesus Christ, he has come all the way to us. And now, by the Holy Spirit, he invites us to participate in his own life.
That's where transformation begins. Not with our frantic effort to reach God, but with receiving the God who has reached us.
So today, maybe the invitation is simply to open your hands. To stop striving for a moment. To remember that you are not alone. The Spirit of the living God is with you. And that same Spirit is at work, forming Christ's life in you.
You don't have to manufacture that life. You are invited to receive it, to participate in it, and to share it with the world.
And that's the prayer I have for my own soul. That's the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and for you.
May it be so.
TODAY'S PRAYERS:
Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.
Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen
And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen.
