TODAY’S EPISODE

Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible. Today is October 8th, and our readings are Ezra 9–10, Psalm 131, and Luke 21.

There is a lot happening in these passages.

Ezra is grieving what he sees among his people. There is confession, sorrow, and the painful recognition that something needs to change.

Then Psalm 131 gives us a very different image.

The psalmist says that he has calmed and quieted himself, like a child resting with its mother.

And then we come to Luke 21.

Jesus watches a poor widow place two small coins into the offering.

Others give from their abundance. She gives from her poverty.

Then Jesus begins speaking about the temple, about upheaval, conflict, persecution, and uncertainty.

The world his disciples know will change.

Some of the things they believed were permanent will not remain.

And Jesus tells them:

Don’t panic.

Don't be deceived.

Don't allow fear to determine how you live.

Remain faithful.

Endure.

Stay awake.

Maybe Psalm 131 gives us a picture of how that is possible.

A quiet heart does not mean a trouble-free life.

It means discovering where to rest when the world around us is anything but quiet.

TODAY’S DEVOTION

I keep coming back to the image in Psalm 131.

A quieted soul.

The psalmist says,

“I have calmed and quieted myself.”

That sounds wonderful.

But it is not always easy.

Our minds can be noisy places.

We rehearse conversations.

We anticipate problems that haven't happened yet.

We imagine outcomes.

We try to predict what other people are thinking.

We attempt to control tomorrow before tomorrow arrives.

And then Jesus says something remarkably simple in Luke 21:

Don't panic.

He isn't saying that nothing difficult will happen.

In fact, he has just told his disciples that difficult things will happen.

Things will change.

Structures they trusted will fall.

There will be conflict.

There will be uncertainty.

There will be moments when they don't know what comes next.

But Jesus seems to be saying:

You don't have to allow the chaos around you to become the chaos within you.

There is another place from which you can live.

Psalm 131 describes it as a child resting with its mother.

No argument.

No explanation.

No certainty about tomorrow.

Just trust.

Maybe faith sometimes looks like that.

Not having all the answers.

Not knowing exactly what will happen.

Not pretending everything is fine.

But learning to rest in the presence of God.

And that brings me back to the widow Jesus notices.

She has almost nothing.

Two small coins.

Yet Jesus sees something in her that others miss.

She opens her hand.

She gives.

She trusts.

Perhaps the invitation today is not to figure everything out.

Perhaps it is simply to unclench our hands.

To loosen our grip on the things we cannot control.

To quiet ourselves in the presence of the One who holds us.

There may be things happening in your life right now that feel uncertain.

There may be decisions you don't know how to make.

There may be circumstances you wish you could change.

There may be something you've been carrying around in your mind all night long.

You don't have to solve tomorrow today.

You can be here.

You can breathe.

You can open your hands.

You can allow your soul to become quiet again.

The world may be noisy.

The future may be uncertain.

But you are held.

And you are loved.

TODAY'S PRAYERS:

Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.

Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen

And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen.
