July 25th, 26: Isaiah 43–45; 1 Peter 4 : Daily Bible in a Year

TODAY'S DEVOTION:

Will we feed on ashes, or feast on the daily bread God gives? Isaiah paints the vivid picture of a person seeking life from the work of their own hands, trusting an idol and, in the end, feeding only on ashes. It is a haunting image—the soul famished and unsatisfied because it tries to draw sustenance from something lifeless, something that cannot save or satisfy. The tragedy is not just the futility, but the blindness that comes with pride and self-reliance—the inability even to ask, "Is this idol I'm holding in my hand a lie?"

But thanks be to God, Jesus has shown us a better way. In his own moment of deep hunger in the wilderness, confronted with the temptation to turn stones into bread, he refused to be sustained by what he could make for himself. Instead, Jesus relied wholly upon the Father, looking to the Source of life itself. He declared, "Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."

In this, Jesus leads us to worship not what our hands have made, but the living God who is the Maker of all things. There is no other God—none beside him. He is not a god of our own creation, but the God who creates and sustains the universe, the One who brings forth bread from the earth.

This is echoed even in the humblest of Jewish prayers: Blessed are you, O God of the universe, who brings forth bread from the earth. Jesus himself prayed and taught us to pray, "Give us this day our daily bread"—reminding us that we never look to idols or to self-reliance for what we need. Our hope, our sustenance, our life is found only in him.

The prayer of my heart today is simple—that I will turn from the ashes of self-reliance and see with clear eyes the God of the universe who gives true bread, true life. May I, and may we all, be faithful to pray as Jesus taught, seeking our daily bread from the Source of it all—trusting that He knows, He sees, He provides.

That's a prayer that I have for my own soul. That's a prayer that I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so.
