"He is among us as one who serves." That's what Luke says here. And Mark tells us that the "Son of man didn't come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." This is who he is. He is a servant King. We can be tempted to think that humility is a service that we pay in order to gain our place of authority. Eat a little crow in order to serve it up someday. You pay your dues, bide your time, until you earn your right to be in charge. But Jesus was not like that. And he still is not like that. He wasn't serving then, in order to earn the right to be served now. No, his service wasn't a means to an end. It was an is who he is. He is one who serves and he bids us to join him to serve others. Not as a means to an end. But because this is who we are. We are servants. We are in him. We sit at his table. It's a table of those who serve in Him.
