TODAY’S EPISODE

Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible. Today is October 7th, and our readings are Ezra 7–8 and Luke 20.

Ezra is preparing for a journey.

He has been given permission to return to Jerusalem, and others will travel with him. There are resources to carry, people to lead, dangers along the road, and plenty that could go wrong.

And yet Ezra keeps returning to one simple phrase.

The gracious hand of God was upon us.

I love that.

Ezra does not pretend there are no risks. He does not ignore the uncertainty of the journey. He simply learns to recognize another reality alongside all of those things.

Grace is present.

God is at work.

He is not alone.

Then in Luke 20, Jesus finds himself surrounded by people asking questions designed to corner him.

“Who gave you this authority?”

“Should we pay taxes to Caesar?”

Questions about resurrection.

Questions intended to expose him, embarrass him, or force him into someone else’s categories.

But Jesus remains remarkably free.

He does not allow their anxiety to become his anxiety.

He does not let their hostility determine his posture.

He knows who he is.

And maybe that is part of what it means to live under the gracious hand of God.

We don't have to control every circumstance.

We don't have to have an answer for everyone.

We don't have to be ruled by the fear of what might happen next.

We can walk the road before us knowing that grace is already there.

TODAY’S DEVOTION

There is something beautifully ordinary about Ezra’s phrase:

The gracious hand of God was on us.

Ezra says it more than once.

Almost as though he has learned to look back over his life and recognize a pattern.

There were circumstances he could not control.

There were people he depended upon.

There were dangers he could not predict.

And yet, somehow, grace kept meeting him.

I wonder how often we miss that.

We can become so focused on what might go wrong that we stop noticing the grace that is already carrying us.

Sometimes the gracious hand of God looks dramatic.

A door opens.

A prayer is answered.

Something impossible suddenly becomes possible.

But often it is quieter than that.

It is the person who calls at the right moment.

It is strength when you thought you had none left.

It is wisdom that comes slowly.

It is courage to have the conversation you have been avoiding.

It is enough light for the next step.

Grace does not always remove uncertainty.

Sometimes grace simply accompanies us through it.

Ezra still had a journey to make.

There were still miles ahead.

There were still risks.

But he could move forward because he believed that the presence of God was greater than the uncertainty of the road.

Maybe you are standing at the beginning of some journey today.

Something is changing.

Something is ending.

Something new is beginning.

And perhaps you don't know exactly how it is going to unfold.

You don't need to know everything.

You don't have to see the whole road.

Maybe today you simply need to recognize the gracious hand of God.

Look back for a moment.

Notice where you have been carried.

Notice the people who have appeared along the way.

Notice the strength you didn't know you had.

Notice the small mercies.

Notice the grace.

And then take the next step.

The gracious hand of God is still upon you.

You are loved.

TODAY'S PRAYERS:

Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.

Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen

And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen.
