Key Takeaways

  • In Nehemiah 5 and 6, Nehemiah confronts internal injustice and exploitation, reminding us that rebuilding Jerusalem requires restored relationships as much as physical stones.
  • Psalm 146 directs our ultimate trust away from fragile human power and toward the God who cares for the oppressed, hungry, and brokenhearted.
  • On the road to Emmaus in Luke 24, discouraged disciples walk with heavy hearts until their eyes are opened and they recognize the risen Jesus.
  • Having our eyes opened by the risen Christ means realizing that Jesus is present even in our disappointments, griefs, and the roads we feel we are walking alone.
  • God often meets us not through dramatic fireworks, but through quiet moments of recognition in Scripture, fellowship, and broken bread.

Episode Description

Today we continue with Nehemiah as he confronts injustice within his own community and refuses to be distracted from the work God has given him. Psalm 146 reminds us not to put our ultimate trust in human power, but in the God who cares for the oppressed, the hungry, the stranger, and the brokenhearted.

Then Luke 24 brings us to resurrection morning. The tomb is empty, two discouraged disciples walk the road to Emmaus, and the risen Jesus comes alongside them before they even recognize who he is. Their eyes are eventually opened, and they discover that Christ has been with them all along. Today’s readings invite us to ask for eyes to see the risen Christ already present on the road we are walking. Apple Podcasts

TODAY’S EPISODE

Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible. Today is October 11th, and our readings are Nehemiah 5–6, Psalm 146, and Luke 24.

Nehemiah is still rebuilding the wall, but now he discovers that some of the greatest threats are coming from inside the community.

People are taking advantage of one another.

The poor are being crushed by debt.

Families are struggling.

And Nehemiah refuses to look away.

He confronts those who are exploiting their neighbors and reminds them that rebuilding Jerusalem means more than putting stones back into a wall.

A restored city needs restored relationships.

Justice matters.

How we treat one another matters.

Then Psalm 146 tells us where our hope ultimately belongs.

Not in rulers.

Not in human power.

Not in people who promise to fix everything.

Our hope is in the God who keeps his promises, gives justice to the oppressed, feeds the hungry, lifts those who are weighed down, and watches over the stranger.

And then we arrive at Luke 24.

The tomb is empty.

Jesus is alive.

Yet two disciples are walking toward Emmaus with heavy hearts.

They believe the story is over.

Their hopes have collapsed.

And Jesus comes walking right beside them.

They just don't recognize him.

I wonder how often that happens to us.

We think God is absent.

We think the story has ended.

We think hope has died.

And Christ is already walking beside us.

TODAY’S DEVOTION

I love the Emmaus story because these two disciples are not walking toward some great spiritual victory.

They're walking away disappointed.

They had hoped.

Those words say so much.

“We had hoped...”

We had hoped things would turn out differently.

We had hoped the relationship would heal.

We had hoped the diagnosis would be different.

We had hoped the door would open.

We had hoped the prayer would be answered the way we imagined.

We had hoped.

And sometimes the road after disappointment can feel very lonely.

But here is what they don't know.

Jesus is walking with them.

The risen Christ is right there.

They simply cannot see him yet.

And Jesus doesn't scold them for their sadness.

He walks.

He listens.

He asks questions.

Then he begins opening the Scriptures to them.

Later they will say that their hearts were burning within them while he talked with them along the road.

And finally, at the table, he takes bread.

He blesses it.

He breaks it.

And suddenly their eyes are opened.

They recognize him.

I wonder if resurrection sometimes comes to us like that.

Not always as fireworks.

Sometimes as recognition.

A moment when we suddenly realize:

Christ has been here all along.

Present in the conversation.

Present in the stranger.

Present in the Scriptures.

Present at the table.

Present in our grief.

Present even on the road we thought we were walking alone.

The disciples had interpreted Friday as the end of the story.

But God was already writing Sunday.

Maybe there are places in your own life that still feel like Friday.

Something has been lost.

Something hasn't turned out the way you expected.

Something you hoped for has disappeared.

You don't have to pretend it doesn't hurt.

But don't assume the story is finished.

The risen Christ may be closer than you realize.

Ask for eyes to see.

Ask for a heart awake to his presence.

Listen again.

Look again.

Receive the bread.

Receive the grace.

And perhaps you will discover that the One you thought was absent has been walking beside you the entire time.

Christ is risen.

Hope is alive.

And you are loved.

TODAY'S PRAYERS:

Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.

Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen

And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen.
