Welcome to the Daily Radio Bible! On this August 27th episode, Hunter guides us through Jeremiah 52, Revelation 1, and Psalms 143–144.
Jeremiah closes with the tragic fall of Jerusalem. The city is burned, the temple is destroyed, King Zedekiah is blinded, and God’s people are carried into exile. It is a devastating picture of a king and kingdom brought low.
But our reading does not end in the ruins. Revelation opens with John’s vision of Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the first to rise from the dead, and the ruler of all the kings of the world. This King has eyes like flames of fire, feet like polished bronze, and a voice like mighty ocean waves.
Today’s devotion reminds us that Christ enters the ruins of our lives, gathers the exiles, and leads us home. The story does not end in captivity, fear, or defeat. Because of Jesus, it will end with a song of deliverance, freedom, joy, and love.
TODAY'S DEVOTION:
It will end with a song.
Today, for the first time this year, we finished a book of the Bible. And Jeremiah ends with a song of exile and judgment.
We read of a king and a kingdom brought low.
Zedekiah is blinded. Jerusalem is reduced to rubble. The temple is burned, and the people are sent away from their home.
But the story does not end in ruin.
From the ruins of Jeremiah, we move into John’s vision in Revelation. And in that vision, we see hope rising from the ashes.
Someone like the Son of Man emerges.
He is a King far greater than Zedekiah. His eyes are like flames of fire. A gold sash crosses his chest. His feet are like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice is as mighty as ocean waves.
This is our King.
This is Jesus.
And this King gathers all the exiles.
He gathers the broken, the fearful, the defeated, and those who have known captivity in body, soul, or spirit. He seeks out those who have been crushed beneath the weight of ruins, those who have been scattered and long to find their way home.
To every exile, he offers a new kingdom and a new song.
It is not a song of despair, but a song of deliverance and hope.
The psalmist gives us the words:
“May there be no enemy breaking through our walls, no going into captivity, no cries of alarm in our town squares. Yes, joyful are those who live like this! Joyful indeed are those whose God is the Lord.”
This is not simply the ending of today’s Scripture reading. It is the ending of our story too.
Our lives, no matter how marked by ruin or exile, will end with a song that leads us forward into eternal life.
Our King has come, and there is none like him.
So let this song, the song of his love and freedom, take root in your heart. Grow more convinced and more devoted to its message.
His love sets us free.
And this love is not only for us. It is for the world.
For God so loved the world.
Whatever ruins you see today, do not mistake them for the end of the story.
Whatever exile you are experiencing, do not believe that you have been forgotten.
The risen King is gathering his people. He walks among us. His voice is like mighty waters, and his word to the frightened and fallen is still the same:
“Don’t be afraid.”
The story will end with a song.
That’s the prayer I have for my own soul today. That’s the prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that’s the prayer I have for you.
May it be so.
TODAY'S PRAYERS:
Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.
Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. And where there is sadness, Joy. Oh Lord grant that I might not seek to be consoled as to console. To be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in the giving that we receive, in the pardoning that we are pardoned, it is in the dying that we are born unto eternal life. Amen
And now as our Lord has taught us we are bold to pray...
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven, give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our tresspasses as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not unto temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Loving God, we give you thanks for restoring us in your image. And nourishing us with spiritual food, now send us forth as forgiven people, healed and renewed, that we may proclaim your love to the world, and continue in the risen life of Christ. Amen.
