TODAY'S DEVOTION:

You have a part to play. You have your own note to add to God's great symphony. You get to add your unique sound to the magnificent masterpiece that God is composing in and through his people. The very word “personality” comes from the Latin word “persona,” literally meaning your sound. God has created you to offer your sound, your life, your presence, to his great song.

Ephesians 2:10 tells us that we are God’s masterpiece. That word in the Greek is poema; it means poem. God has expertly crafted you to be exactly who you are, right where you are. To learn to play our part in the music of God’s kingdom, we must begin by accepting our own humanity—because God has. He has accepted your humanity; he has even embraced all of humanity. He became one of us. He knows every secret, every weakness. As the prophet says, he remembers that we are but dust. And yet, in Christ, you have become a partaker of the divine nature—God’s very life now dwells in you.

You are deeply valued and cherished by God. Part of our Christian journey is learning to discover what it means to partake in the life of God. This does not make us God, but it does mean we’ve been welcomed into his family, his purposes, his symphony.

So as we learn to play our part, we must remember both our humanity and our participation in God’s divine life. When that is lived out, it looks like giving of oneself—being radically forgiving, learning to suffer alongside those who are in pain, offering self-giving, radically forgiving, co-suffering love. This is what it looks like to live as the masterpiece you truly are.

That is a prayer I have for my own soul. That is a prayer I have for my family, for my wife, my daughters, and my son. And that is a prayer I have for you. May it be so.
