March 24th, 26:Joshua 23-24, Psalm 44, 1 Corinthians 11; Daily Bible in a Year

TODAY'S DEVOTION:

We hear the cry of the flesh: “I will do it.” That was Israel’s confident response to Joshua—“We will serve the Lord”—but Joshua challenged them, saying, “No, you will not.” Israel insisted, “We will do it.” And how often do we echo that same refrain? Our hearts, like Peter’s, boldly declare things like “I will never disown you,” only to discover the weakness of our resolve when the moment of testing comes. Before the rooster crowed, Peter had denied the Lord three times. That is the story of the flesh—full of promises, full of self-assurance, but destined to betray both ourselves and God.

What we need is not another promise from ourselves, but Someone who can do what we could never do, Someone who has done it. That Someone is Jesus. He is the One who was faithful when we were not. He undid what Adam—and all the sons and daughters of Adam—have continued to do. He kept the covenant. He served his Father in absolute obedience, all the way to the end. He did it. And after he had done it, he declared, “It is finished. It is done.”

So, as God's people, we need not rely on our own flesh. We need not say, “We will do it.” Instead, let us proclaim, “It is done. He has done it.” Let us live in the reality of Christ’s victory—not our own striving, but his finished work. Because he did it, we can remain in the land. We can remain in him, in his promise and in life. Live in the One who has accomplished what we could never accomplish. That’s the prayer for my soul; that’s the prayer for my family—my wife, my daughters, my son. And that’s the prayer that I have for you. May it be so.
