Jesus let's Nicodemus in on a secret, something that will be revealed at the end of his life. The disciples would struggle to see this throughout his ministry, even though Jesus attempted numerous times, to tell them what was going to happen to him. But here point blank he tells Nicodemus, just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, in order that he might draw humanity to himself. Later on in the same Gospel, Jesus again, refers to this moment. In chapter 12, he says, and when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself. in Christ's crucifixion, we see the drawing of humanity, to the Son of Man, in our darkened state, he has come to us. So dark, in fact, we don't know what we're doing. We don't realize that we're crucifying God. So Jesus cries from the cross, saying, Father, forgive them. They don't know what they're doing. We don't realize the evil, the violence, the darkness that our world is descended into. The Christ has come to reveal the life of God, the life that he shares with his Father in the Spirit. And he's come to draw us into that Perichoresis life that is shared in God, Christ has drawn you into himself. in Christ's death, we see a victory over the blindness over the darkness over evil over death over the grave. in Christ's crucifixion. We see the self giving life of Father Son and Spirit, we see the radical forgiveness of love. And we see God suffering alongside of us. We see him God opened our eyes to see him more Amen.
