In the Shadow of God

Today’s reading is from the book of Exodus 37-38; Psalms 19 and Acts 11. We are reading through the New Living Translation.

I used to be fascinated with shadows when I was a kid. Growing up in Southern California, the sun was always out. I loved shadows. As I’d walk down the sidewalk, they were out in front of me, or behind me, or to the side of me, doing exactly what I was doing.  It was a mysterious thing to me as a kid.

Bezalel, this master craftsman, mentioned here in Exodus, has been tasked by Moses to build this tabernacle.  This temple is a shadow, a copy, of a temple that is in Heaven. Bezalel’s name even  means, “in the shadow of God”.

The shadow that he lives under is another Craftsman, someone far greater than Bezalel is.  And his name is Jesus.  Jesus is a far better Bezalel and he is making things, too.  He is making a temple.  And he is doing it with the most precious materials.  Bezalel used silver and gold and bronze and precious stones.  But Jesus is using something even more valuable.  He is using people - you and I.  We are the temple of God. We are carefully being fit together, placed together, into God’s house, by the hand of God. He is the master builder, and he will build his house.

And you are living stones that God is building into his spiritual temple. What’s more, you are his holy priests. Through the mediation of Jesus Christ, you offer spiritual sacrifices that please God. (1 Peter 2:5)

He is building a dwelling, a meeting place, for God and his people.  It is a place where we can talk, be forgiven, and be made new. It’s beautiful and spectacular and it feels like home.  So let’s take a look at what Bezalel is making here in Exodus. It, too, is delightful, inspired, magical, and amazing, but it’s only a shadow.  The reality is what Christ is doing. He’s the Master Builder.  He is making a masterpiece, and you are included.

Today, live, not in the shadow, but in the reality of Christ himself.  Let’s Rejoice in the Master creator, who has included us into his very life.   Christ is building something and we are a part of it.  Make your home right there with him.
