TODAY'S DEVOTION:
God's love is standing right in front of us. In John 5, we witness the religious leaders missing the very presence of God’s love—Jesus—right in their midst. Though they diligently searched the Scriptures, hoping for eternal life in their devotion to the letter of the law, Jesus gently but firmly reveals the truth: the Scriptures point to him, but they refuse to come to Him to receive true life. It’s a sobering moment, as Jesus says, “Your approval means nothing to me because you don’t have God’s love in you.” God’s love had come into the world, for all people, including those standing there, but they did not recognize him.
How easy it is to let our desire for control, power, rules, or judgment build walls that block the love God wants to give us. We can miss him—not because he is absent, but because our eyes are looking elsewhere. Instead of welcoming the God who is love, we may find ourselves clinging to ideas of wrath, order, and self-justification, losing sight of the heart of God revealed in Christ. Yet the invitation remains open: will we open our hearts? Will we recognize the love of God that is present, waiting for us to respond?
Today, we have the choice to come to Jesus. No matter what voices from our past, or what religious systems may have taught us about power or punishment or striving—Jesus invites us to trust that the God we seek is, above all, love. He says it plainly: “The Scriptures point to me, yet you refuse to come to me to receive this life.” What we most long for—belonging, healing, hope, and adoption—are offered freely in him.
That is my prayer today: that our hearts and minds would be reoriented by the Holy Spirit; that we might come to Jesus, the one who is love, and receive the life he gives so freely. Let us lay down striving and judgment, and instead embrace the God who stands before us, arms open. May the reality of God’s love be the truth that strengthens, reassures, and encourages us, that we might go into the world as people who know and share this abiding love.
That’s a prayer I have for my own soul. That’s a prayer I have for my family, for my friends, and for you. May it be so.
